The only "surprising" thing about youth autonomy is that they still don't have any
Let's stop stripping young people of their agency.
This past week I made a reel after seeing an NYT piece about the “surprising” results of “giving” young people more autonomy. I’m elaborating on this below, and please excuse my barely disguised indignation - this topic is close to my heart.
First, let’s give a collective shrug of resignation about the media coverage around children and youth. I will write more on that soon, but basically it reflects the way society at large views and treats children. The use of the word “giving” by the authors of the NYT piece is a case in point. (Our children are born autonomous, just like the rest of us. Their autonomy is not ours to give, or to take away for that matter.)
